WORKSHOP OBJECTIVE:

This course will teach you how to understand and control your hot-shoe flash. You'll learn to use it in manual mode, calculating the lighting conditions (GND) for precise and quick exposures. You'll also explore different techniques for using your hot-shoe flash to create stunning images.

METHODOLOGY

DURATION: one day   August 27th, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

SYLLABUS:

In the morning: (Theory):

We will look at flash speed and HSS mode on some flashes. We will also cover the technique of:

  • Flash bounced off the ceiling and the wall.

  • Painted with flash.

  • Slow flash, still and in motion.

  • Repeating or stroboscopic flash.

  • Front curtain vs. rear curtain.

  • Using the flash in slave mode and with radio transmitters.

  • Off-camera flash, how to put together your lighting setup.

Afternoon (Practice):

  • Flash photography

  • We set up a still life and the students can see how everything changes when we change the lighting scheme.
    We also do a portrait session, where we apply different lighting techniques.

How do I sign up?

What equipment should I bring to the workshop?
For the practical session, you'll need your camera and at least one lens, preferably a short telephoto lens (this could be a prime lens like 70mm, 85mm, or 105mm, or a zoom lens like 70-200mm, 70-300mm, 24-105mm, etc.). You should also bring a hot-shoe flash and, if possible, a tripod for your camera.
